July 1st, 2009Top Ten Ideas for SMM Startup Promotion
One of the problems faced when promoting new services using SMM strategy is a lack of informational reasons. You have to do your best to impact social media users as their tastes have become refined due to the great saturation of media market. Ads like: “Welcome a new service comprising such tools like blah-blah-blah – viva Web 2.0!” are hardly of any use now. Today we are witnessing the emergence and collapse of so many services that it is hardly possible to track all of them.
Here you are with the ten informational reasons for the effective impact on social media audience.
- Write a story of a successful startup. The success stories are always exciting, so a well developed case study is sure to draw everybody’s attention.
- Gain the support of celebrities. A comment – or even better registration – of a well-known person is a highly effective way of attracting public attention to the startup.
- Make a review of similar services disclosing their benefits and drawbacks. Just let people know who is who in this market niche. And, of course, you are welcome to underline the advantages of your own service – but still being very careful. It is important to be honest: do not mention non-existent disadvantages of your competitors’ offers or non-existent advantages of your own service. Otherwise, you will be considered a liar.
- Use viral campaigns. Startup promotion is exactly the case when a viral campaign can be highly effective. For example, you can spread information about a hidden page with the extended capabilities.
- Write a short story as if you were a user. People like reading all those “zzz.com – first impressions” and “real users’ comments – zzz.com”. However, it is worth remembering that somewhat story of praise will not do at all. People want to read real impressions of an independent user.
- Boast of your success. The principle of social proof runs: “We consider our behavior in the given situation appropriate if others behave the same way as we do (R. Cialdini, Influence: Psychology of Persuasion). Thus, on learning that 10,000 of users have already joined you, people are most likely to think: “Why the hell am I not with them?”
- Find a juicy tidbit and make it work. The full description of the service capabilities is always perceived as a standard advertising message. Find a peculiar thing disclosing the difference between your own service and the similar market alternatives and dedicate the article to the colorful description of the found tidbit.
- Show your financial results. Nobody will resist looking into someone else’s purse – you know we are talking about Web 2.0 that belongs to all. Tell people how profitable your resource is and it is sure to become the focus of everybody’s attention. Disclosing your good financial results to public will make people join you.
- Organize users’ meeting and describe it in a report. Think of doing something unusual as the stuff like which bar you met in or how much beer you drank would not be very involving. For example, arrange a flash-mob after which you may choose to continue the party. Announce a competition of speed swimming in a fountain or invite a celebrity.
- Disclose the way you promoted your resource. It is strange but a story of service promotion can contribute to its success. Do not be afraid of being sincere and revealing some secrets like what means you used to impact the audience. Still, do not hurry up to disclose all your secrets until the promotion yielded some fruits.
The list is still open as we are always on the lookout for new ideas. You are welcome to share your own ideas by adding comments. We appreciate your contributions!
