July 30th, 2009Top Ten Extraordinary Ways of Using Facebook
Facebook has become an inherent part of modern society. Now, millions of people start their day checking the personal page on Facebook. Facebook is perceived as a kind of online get-together where users meet their old friends and find the new ones. As it turns out, however, there are the other, much more extraordinary ways of using this “number one” social media website. That is exactly what I am going to tell you about.

So, here you are with top ten extraordinary ways of using Facebook.
1. Betting
There are a lot of groups on Facebook called in the way like: “If this group is joined by 100,000 users, I bet passing through the town absolutely naked.” The administrators of such groups set the user quantity bar very high and swear to do something extraordinary like changing the name, shifting to queer, or appearing naked in public.
There was a group at website “Vkontakte”, which is Russian counterpart of Facebook, called “If this group is joined by 500,000 users, I bet running along Arbat (the main street in Moscow) in the strings of Borat.” After the group had been joined by 500,000 users, its manager carried out his pledge. The run reporting video was later uploaded to YouTube.
Besides, such betting is a wonderful way of group promotion. Nevertheless, as a rule, after the betting is over, the popularity of such groups is headily fading away.
2. Pages for newborn babies
Modern parents often start Facebook profile for their babies immediately after their birth, where they upload the child’s photos and videos, write notes about his/her name and add relatives to his/her friend list. It is quite reasonable that at the age of seven the personal page will rouse some interest in the child himself and he will start keeping it. And upon reaching of adult age the page will become the integral part of his life.
Thus, I conclude that now we face the coming of new generation of people, whose natural age will be exactly equal to the years of their Facebook profile.
3. Dead commemoration
Unlike pages for newborn people, there are also pages for the commemoration of the dead ones. There are memorial groups for celebrities (e.g. Heath Ledger and Steve Irwin), for children died of violation, war veterans, etc.
4. Lovers’ reunion
Once a young guy created a group on Facebook and asked all its members to write messages for his girlfriend, he was at quarrel with, and tell that he loves her badly. As a result, the girl got dozens of thousands messages, so she had nothing to do, but to forgive her boyfriend. On the task completion the group was closed.
5. Collection of debts
A particular friend of mine working for a big collection firm told me the way they use Facebook for business purposes: “First of all, Facebook as well as other social media is a perfect way of debtors’ search. We can remind them that they should repay a debt through interface itself or by using contact information which is often publicly available. Besides, it is a wonderful way of applying psychological pressure. We may write at the debtor’s wall that he/she is a persistent non-payer or direct messages to the members of his/her friend list warning that their “so-called” friend is a man without scruples and is not got used to repaying debts. As a rule, this method appears to be very effective as people care much about their reputation among other users.”
6. Citizenship
Music, football and sketch comedies are not the only topics discussed by Facebook users, as they very actively express their opinion on different socio-political issues. 738, 000 Facebook users has joined the group supporting Palestinians in Gaza Strip. More than a million of people has registered in a group sympathizing with Barack Obama. More than 800, 000 people impeach credit to Hillary Clinton and 123, 000 users strive for same-sex marriage ratification with the help of Facebook.
7. Pages for pets
Despite the availability of special social media for pets, many users create the pages for their beloved pets on Facebook. They regularly update such pages, add their pets’ photos and videos as well as “invite” to their friend list other pets.
8. Sex dating
Virtual media dispose people for liberation. This is precisely why it is much easier for people to chum up for sex at social media websites. On Facebook there are sex dating groups for both people with traditional sexual predilection and those preferring freak sex. There are special groups for swingers, gays and sado-masochists. There are also pages where street girls offer their services as well as answer some piquant questions online or even take the orders.
9. Psychological and social studies
Under ordinary conditions, to conduct a study, scholars need a test group, special equipment and a laboratory with simulated experimental conditions. The only thing they need to conduct a study on Facebook is a profile. Besides, the users’ behavior at social media websites is just a projection of their real-life behavior: the same psychological rules work here as well, and people are guided by the same behavioral stereotypes. It is also helpful that users having common interests and socio-demographic characteristics are usually inclined to unite into groups by their own will. Thus, the scholars’ task is limited to the study web customization. And that is it!
10. Pages for movie characters
Personal pages of some movie characters such as James Bond, Master Yoda and Agent Fox Mulder are often created by social media wolves to gather a vast user base for spam distribution. However, sometimes such pages are created by movie factories themselves to provide an additional promotion for coming movies. Often such pages are rather interactive as there you can talk to a movie character, ask him questions and, what is more, get his answers (though generated by the specialists of the movie factory marketing department).
And what personally you think about it? How you and your friends use Facebook? I am willingly waiting for your answers in comments!
